"Southeast Asia is really cheap!"
"Australia is sooo expensive!"
"Hong Kong and Singapore are quite pricey in comparison to Thailand.."

These are all tidbits I'd heard when I told people where I was planning to travel. Essentially, I was trying to figure out how much money I'd need to save, up until the day I left. So I sat down, looked at different blogs, took my trusty Lonely Planet book and tried to estimate an average of money I'd spend a day on accommodation and food.
I'm not going to bore you with the process, but I figured out an average of 30€ a day (15€ for Food and 15€ for accommodations). Since we are two people and that would leave us with a budget of 30€ a night (15*2) for hotels (A bit more given that one of the three months will be spent at my aunts).
We're gone for 100 days so that amounts to 3000€ for just accomodations and food p.P. For the big flights I calculated 1200€ and for the in land trips 1100€. Another 1200€ will give us the possibility for activities, and then we end up with a grand total of 6500€. (Additional pre-trip expenses might include a practical back pack, any travel accesoires, travel insurances and vaccinations (!) this might amount to an additional 700€ or more)
This is very generously calculated, since there are some places in Southeast Asia where there are rumours of $2 Hostels. But for one, I like to live by "Rather Safe than Sorry" and for another, my boyfriend does preferr a more luxurious travel style over a backpacking trip.
I believe it's always better to have money left in the end than to find yourself short of it when you just found something fun to do.
