Settling insurances is a very important chore to complete before commencing your travels. Since I am based in Germany this post will only relate to the German insurance system.

There are three types of insurances that I looked into:

International Health Insurance

(Auslandskrankenversicherung)

Luggage Insurance

(Gepäckversicherung)

International Liability Insurance

(Auslandshaftpflichtversicherung)

The first thing to do is to check all your current insurances, and see if they would already cover you during your time abroad.

Luckily my liability insurance does cover me abroad worldwide up until one year. My health insurance does not include any service outside of Germany, and my household insurance (Hausratversicherung) only covers my luggage up to 42 days spent abroad.

I booked an Auslandskrankenversicherung with Hanse Merkur. They set a price for each day your abroad and cover most costs to do with anything that could come up due to your health. What I payed attention to while researching the health insurances, was if they covered transport back to your home country if medically necessary. The Hanse Merkur one does include this as well as many other services, I will add a link down below incase you're interested.

Since I am not planning on taking many valuables on my trip, I need to figure out what kind of basic Luggage insurance I will book or if I am even going to go to the trouble of booking one. The only valuables I'd be taking are my mobile, a kindle and my raybans. Of these, solely my raybans will be covered by a basic luggage insurance.
